Synopsis

Periostitis : Alkaline phosphatase elevated, Arm pain, Bone pain, Hip pain, Leg pain, Pain out of proportion to exam findings, Polyarthralgia
Inflammation of the periosteum, the covering of bones. Generally chronic, but may be acute.
  • Chronic – Manifests with tenderness and swelling of the bone and an aching pain, and may be due to systemic inflammatory disorders.
  • Noninfectious acute – Shin splints in athletes is a common cause.
  • Infectious acute – Typically manifests with diffuse suppuration, severe pain, and systemic symptoms; it often results in necrosis.
