Synopsis
Endocrine-related disorder of sexual development due to early secretion of gonadotropins characterized by pubertal changes and secondary sex characteristics before age 8 in females and age 9 in males. Also known as gonadotropin-dependent precocious puberty, it may be nonprogressive (transient, incomplete, or regressive) or progressive. Common signs and symptoms include accelerated linear growth, bone growth maturation, testicular and penile development, facial hair in males, breast development and menarche in females, and development of pubic hair.
Treatment of progressive central precocious puberty requires monitoring of age, growth, and rate of pubertal progression with consideration for the child's psychological well-being. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) therapy may be used to suppress onset of pubertal symptoms until appropriate age and height.
