Synopsis

Balanitis is inflammation of the glans penis. Balanoposthitis refers to inflammation of both the glans and foreskin in uncircumcised males. Infants are predisposed to balanitis by chronic exposure of the glans penis to a moist occluded environment (ie, presence of a foreskin and diapering), which leads to maceration and a compromised skin barrier. Exposure to urine, soaps, Candida, and bacterial overgrowth exacerbate the dermatitis.
