Synopsis
Maternal varicella infection has been associated with a pattern of malformation in the infant characterized by limb hypoplasia, cutaneous scarring, eye abnormalities, and defects of central nervous system development. The fetal varicella syndrome occurs in fewer than 2% of infants born to women infected with the virus before 20 weeks gestation. Transplacental viral transmission is thought to be low.
