Synopsis

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) refers to the association of symptoms or complications due to the reflux of gastric contents into the esophageal lumen due to immaturity of the gastroesophageal junction. In the absence of symptoms, it is referred to as GER (gastroesophageal reflux). GER is common in newborns, with an estimated prevalence of approximately 50%. It is most common in neonates, and incidence decreases with age, often resolving by age 12-18 months.

Signs and symptoms associated with GERD include vomiting, irritability, arching, cough, and failure to thrive.
