Traumatic onychodystrophy is a common condition where nail deformity occurs due to acute or repeated trauma. It is characterized by changes in nail morphology associated with a history of injuries directed to the nail matrix, plate, bed, and proximal nail fold. It may occur on the fingernails or toenails.
Chronic trauma due to an anatomic abnormality, ill-fitting footwear, occupation, cosmetic procedures, or self-manipulation are common risk factors. Testing for onychomycosis, the main differential diagnosis, is negative.
