Synopsis

Umbilical granulomas are bright red papules at the base of the cord that represent failure of the cord to re-epithelialize. They should be distinguished from umbilical polyps. The etiology is unknown but may be related to a low-grade infection of the cord stump or retained ectopic mucosa sequestrated at the umbilicus.
