Synopsis
The anal canal is approximately 4 cm at its adult length. The upper part of the canal is formed from the hindgut, and the lower from the ectoderm. The anus is the external outlet of the GI tract. The internal anal sphincter is composed of a circular layer of smooth muscle, while the external anal sphincter is composed of the striated muscle of the pelvic floor. The internal sphincter tone is maximized when there is rectal distention.
