Tympanic atelectasis

Synopsis

Retractions of the tympanic membrane that can cause hearing loss and/or cholesteatoma formation. May be secondary to chronic otitis media, chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction, or prior otologic surgery. Most often characterized by hearing loss.

Management may include myringotomy and pressure equalizer tube placement, tympanoplasty, amplification, or observation.
